KC continued consuming the delicious rice and stew at great speed like a prisoner who just regained freedom.

‘I thought I would never see you again,’ Martha said while serving him the juice in the glass cup.

‘I will always come back, if not for anything, at least for you,’ he replied while enjoying his food.

They continued with their discussion.

The love Kelechi and Martha were showering to each other was very strong. It was tormenting them like alcohol. As if the two had been swimming in the ocean of love for years now. Indeed the one year they spent apart from each other really built and sparked their love very strongly.

Kelechi was squatting with one of his friends. He has gone back to computer village, ikeja. He joined ‘Ndi Oso Afia’ so he could earn some income and be able to provide for his dependents.

‘Ndi Oso Afia’ are individuals who do not have enough capital to lease a stall and stock up goods. However, these individuals engaged themselves in scouting for and referring customers to the established merchants who have stalls in the market square, and, in return, earn commission on any successful sale.

An individual who engages in ‘Oso Afia’ is called an ‘Onye Oso Afia’ , whereas a group of such individuals are called ’Ndi Oso Afia’.

‘Ndi Oso Afia’ method of scouting for customers is top notch. You would even meet them hanging at the entrance of the market hustling for customers. And they would approach you upon sighting you coming into the market. They would even promise to take you where you would get the goods at a cheaper rate. In fact, they would sweet talk you into giving them a trial. Then take you to a shop where you would get what you want and they earn their commission on any successful sale.

At times they would even disguise themselves as the owner of the shop to give their prey the impression of being the ‘Nnukwu Oga’(shop owner). They had this mutual understanding with ‘Ndi Oga’(shop owners), to the extent some of the ‘Ndi Oga’ could even switch into the role of the servant at that moment just to ensure the success of the transaction. Thereafter, everybody would go back to its real position and the commission would be given to the ‘Onye Oso Afia’ for a job well done.

That was how Kelechi was surviving in Lagos. Though fortune was smiling at him as he was able to save from the proceeds of his hustle. Martha was there for him through thick and thin. She supported and encouraged him a lot. She even introduced him to ‘Ajo’(a pooled contribution).

Martha wanted KC to save up and get at least a space inside the market and start up a business. That was the plan. And KC was seriously working and saving up for that.

Martha was also saving secretly so as to support KC as well. She was very determined to make sure KC succeeds in life. And she has backed that up with praying and fasting as well.

Martha has become a blessing to Kelechi. Even KC himself knew that very well. However, he doesn’t joke with her. He always gave a listening ear to Martha because no advice has ever come from her that has become a loss to him if well applied.

Meanwhile Martha has given KC a lot of connections in that market. When I say connections, I mean high profile customers from the north. Most of these customers were businessmen and individuals. The individuals were mostly uniform men.

Martha being a sincere and jovial young lady, coupled with the fact that she came from the north and spoke Hausa fluently, she became so reliable and trusted that people liked doing business with her, especially those from the north. As such, she always front KC to execute any contract that was not of their line of business.

Martha’s sincerity and personality has paved a very big way for her in that market. In fact, she has started meeting with people that matter in the society. Ever since she met commandant Musa, her life and that of KC has never been the same. It was Jubril, her very good customer, that introduced her to commandant Musa. Jubril was an orderly ranked officer assigned to commandant Musa in the Air Force Base, Ikeja.

Commandant Musa has good intentions for Martha. Apart from Martha’s sincerity, another thing commandant Musa loved so much about Martha was her dogged spirit of hard work. In fact, he has tested her beyond every reasonable doubt. He now has full confidence and trust in her.

COMMANDANT MUSA’S OFFICE:

‘Jubril, what do you think about Martha?’, Musa asked.

‘Sir, she is hardworking, honest and she delivers. In fact, for the past one year I have known her and been doing business with her, she has never failed even for one day,’ Jubril remarked.

‘You are right. I have tested her in many ways and she always passes my tests,’ he paused. ‘I think this is the right time to reward her for her honesty,’ commandant Musa said.

‘Sir, Martha deserved it. And you would never regret trusting her,’ Jubril assured his boss.

‘I am thinking of compensating her with a contract. The contract to change all the desktops in all the administrative units in this barrack,’ commandant Musa announced.

‘Sir, like I said before, you will never regret it. I can even bet with my life that she will deliver,’ Jubril had to assure her boss again.

‘No problem. Let’s see how it goes’ commandant Musa added.
