???? A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE FIFTY SEVEN:
PREVIOUSLY ON A DAUGHTER’S REVENGE:
…meanwhile, Martha’s fatigue was becoming worse everyday by day. And worst still, she had been noticing an early morning sickness.
All these symptoms were not good as a single lady.
‘What’s wrong with me? For the past two months now, I have not been myself. And I have been treating malaria and typhoid all to no avail,’ she paused while entertaining so many thoughts. ‘Are mine pregnant?,’ she asked herself. ‘But how can I be pregnant and still be seeing my period? I have never missed my period’, Martha had to reply to herself. ‘I think I have to go see a doctor. Yes! I have to. At least, let me know what exactly is wrong with me..’, she concluded.
THE CONTINUATION:
Mr. Johnson’s wife had finally given birth after about fifteen years of childless marriage. It was a double blessing as God had blessed them with twins — baby boy and baby girl.
Mr. Johnson was the first son of late Mr. Frank, Aunty Ifeoma’s husband. He was the product of late Mr. Frank’s first wife.
When Aunty Ifeoma heard the good news, she screamed on top of her voice in joy. She was in a public transport that fateful day, stocked in traffic, when the message popped up on her phone. Her stepson, Johnson, sent her the message via WhatsApp and promised to call her immediately after he got home from the hospital.
The moment Aunty Ifeoma read the message, she began jumping up in excitement, screaming. She really caused a big stir in the bus that night. As her fellow passengers thought something bad had happened to her. But when people heard her testimony, many joined her in the celebration inside the bus.
Days later, Aunty Ifeoma was set to travel to Canada for ‘Omugwo’ (postpartum care).
Aunty Ifeoma has been in Canada for the past three months now.
She has been in touch with Martha.
Meanwhile, Martha had decided against using the family doctor for her body checkup and treatment. Instead, she used a different hospital for the purpose.
‘…A big congratulations to you Mrs Martha Danladi..’, the doctor announced in joy while handing her the parcel. It was a pregnancy test result.
The doctor had earlier recommended a pregnancy test for Martha. Although what Martha came for was to have malaria and typhoid tests. But after narrating to the doctor the symptoms she was having, the doctor had to suggest a pregnancy test first before any other test.
‘Doctor, for what do I own this congratulation?,’ Martha had to ask amid confusion. She was terribly terrified. As she shivered in fear of pregnancy.
‘You are two months gone. Congratulations once again…’, the doctor announced.
‘D-d-doctor…what do you mean I am two months gone?,’ she asked, eyes clouded with tears already.
‘What I mean is that you are two months pregnant. Congratulations once again,’ the doctor explained.
The news hit Martha like a thunderbolt. She was very shocked. As she couldn’t believe it.
‘D-doctor, I think there’s a mix-up somewhere. That’s not possible. I cannot be pregnant..,’Martha argued in tears.
‘Madam, we are very professional in our dealings here. So the possibility of any mix-up is not realistic..,’ the doctor stated.
Even at that, Martha refused to accept the fact that she was pregnant. She argued with the doctor.
But after all was said and done, Martha had to take her leave in tears. She was totally shattered. Totally broken. Crying bitterly as she left the hospital.
‘Ah! I am dead o! My life has finished. Kelechi has finally kîlled me. What have I done to deserve this? Who did I offend?..,’ Martha was screaming while walking home.
‘No! This can’t be true; I can’t be pregnant. No! There must be a mix-up somewhere,’ she paused. ‘I have to retake the test again. Yes! I have to do that In a different hospital,’ Martha concluded.
Martha carried out the pregnancy test up to three times in different hospitals. All the results came out positive, confirming she was pregnant.
It was as if Martha’s word had come to an end because of the pregnancy. She became the shadow of her former self. To the extent she even contemplated sûîçîdé.
Martha became very confused on how to go about the whole thing. The worst part of it was that the man responsible for the pregnancy was no longer in a relationship with her. Who even knows if he would accept the pregnancy. And removing the pregnancy was not an option; it was out of the picture.
In fact, Martha had found herself between the devîl and deep blue sea. As she had equally undesirable alternatives to choose from. But the questions were which of the alternatives she had to choose. To go back to KC? To terminate the pregnancy? Or to keep the pregnancy?
Henceforth, Martha has refused herself food. As tears have become her food. She has also denied herself sleep at nights. As tears has also become her sleep.
Meanwhile, Kelechi had been pleading with Amaka to help him talk to her friend, Martha.
‘..Amaka, I have shattered her heart so much. I have sinned against her. I don’t deserve a place in her heart,’ he paused, sobbing in regret for his actions. ‘But please, let her forgive me. For if there’s no sin, there will be no forgiveness. I am a changed person now..,’ KC was pleading with Amaka to help her talk to Martha.
Kelechi pleaded to the extent Amaka began to have pity on him. His pleadings really touched her heart. Therefore, she agreed to talk to Martha on his behalf.
‘KC, the last time you came to me pleading I talk to Martha on your behalf, what did I tell you? I vowed never to plead on your behalf, ehn?,’ she paused, staring into KC in pity. ‘I am having pity on you. I just hope you have truly repented as you claimed,’ she sighed. ‘I will talk to her. But I am not guaranteeing you a positive outcome. But I will definitely do my best..,’ Amaka assured KC.
~~ ON A SUNDAY ~~
Amaka had visited Martha on that sunny Sunday to know how she was doing. Because she has been sick for some days now. And had been unable to open her shop for the past three days now.
Martha was really sick. Her sickness was as a result of the punishments she melted upon herself.
Although she was getting better already. As there was a lot of improvement, overally.
Of the truth, Martha was very happy to see Amaka around. Because the house has been so boring to her.
Martha really welcomed Amaka very well. At first, she presented to her a kola. Thereafter, she served her food. A white rice and stew.
Amaka ate to her satisfaction before finally engaging Martha in a serious discussion.
‘..my dear, you don’t look good at all. Ah, this is not the girlfriend I used to know. This sickness really affected you very badly,’ she paused, observing Martha from head to toes. ‘Girlfriend, what’s exactly wrong with you?,’ Amaka asked.
The question was what Martha had been praying for Amaka not to ask her. In fact, it hit her like a thunderbolt. Martha was dumbfounded. As she kept quiet and buried her head in shame.
‘I am not pleased with this silence. Martha, what’s wrong with you? Are you pregnant?,’ Amaka released the bombshell.
‘No, I am not pregnant. It’s just malaria and typhoid,’ Martha had to lie.
‘Are you sure? Or is there anything you are not telling me?,’ Amaka had to ask, having not been satisfied with the answer Martha gave her.
‘You know I cannot hide anything from you, Amaka. Nothing else is wrong with me if not malaria and typhoid. The typhoid was ++ while malaria was acute. And I have treated that already. I am just recovering back..’, she had to lie again to cover up her initial lie.
‘I am so sorry, ehn? Please get well soon. I got you some beverages. I believe it will help you to recover fast..,’ Amaka announced. As she drew her nylon bag closer to her and began to empty the bag, handing the beverages to Martha.
‘Thank you very much. You are such a darling. I really appreciate you so much..,’Martha appreciated her so much.
‘Martha, there is something I want to discuss with you..,’ Amaka began.
‘What’s it, Amaka,’ Martha had to ask, very curious.
‘It’s about Kelechi..,’ Amaka began.
‘What about him?,’ Martha interrupted.
‘I think it’s the right time you forgive him. The two of you really need each other. And I believe KC is a changed person now,’ she paused. ‘Babe, please give KC a second chance…’, she pleaded so much.
