???? A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE FIFTY NINE:
PREVIOUSLY ON A DAUGHTER’S REVENGE:
…as soon as they were done with the love making, Martha countenance changed immediately. It was as if she was lured into šèx. As if she engaged in the act unknowingly. As if KC used ‘juju’ on her.
Meanwhile, KC had taken notice of Martha’s sudden mood swing. He became worried and was so inquisitive to know what the problem was.
‘Baby, what’s the problem?,’ KC asked.
‘Hmm..nothing. I am fine..’, Martha said, pretending.
‘Babe, what’s the problem? You can share whatever it’s with me. Talk to me..’, KC pressed.
Martha was very dumbfounded. As she doesn’t know how to start telling KC she was pregnant for him.
‘I don’t think I am ready for this. How do I even start telling him this? How sure I am that he will not deny the pregnancy?..’, Martha was asking herself in silence.
THE CONTINUATION:
‘I am fine. Nothing is wrong with me’, Martha said, crying.
‘Nothing is wrong and you are shedding tears, ehn?,’ KC asked as he was left in total suspense.
It was at this moment that Martha burst into real tears. She started crying so bitterly and uncontrollably.
KC was very worried. He had to draw her closer and comfort her so passionately. Before pressing harder, inquiring what the problem was.
‘Baby m, what’s the problem? Please speak to me. Stop keeping me in suspense..’, KC had to press.
Silent as Martha couldn’t talk. She would open her mouth and close as she couldn’t muster the courage to say out what the problem was.
KC was already panicking. As her heartbeat pounded intensively.
‘Baby, please talk, please.,’ KC resorted to pleading.
‘I-I -I am..’, she was stammering.
‘I am hearing…you are what? Talk let me hear you,’ he asked inquisitively.
‘I am pregnant,’ Martha finally released the bombshell.
‘Pre…what?,’ KC exclaimed.
‘Pregnant,’ Martha helped him and completed the statement.
‘H-h-how come? Who’s responsible for the pregnancy?,’KC muttered, disappointedly.
Martha was shocked at the question KC asked him. She became very angry. It was as if a strange spirit possessed her. As she flared up in anger: ‘I don’t understand. What do you mean by that question? If you are not responsible, then who else? Or do you think I also sleep around like you?..,’ Martha asked, very provoked. As she neve expected such a question from KC.
‘Sorry, I didn’t mean that. Just that, I am really confused. I-I-I m-m-mea..,’ KC was stammering, sweating profusely.
‘You mean what? You mean you don’t know that you are the person responsible? What do you mean?,’Martha was vibrating.
‘Babe, calm down. Please stop shouting at me. I am not denying the pregnancy neither are mine running away from responsibilities. But, I am trying to figure out something because this is the wrong time for this..’, KC was suggesting.
‘What exactly are you figuring out, KC? I heard you say this is the wrong time…wrong time for what?,’ Martha asked, fuming. ‘Look, don’t tell me abôrtîôn this time around. Because that has become a ritual. I will not indulge in such suicidal act again. The last one you forced me to go through, it nearly took my life because of the series of complications I had. So àbôrtion is a big no this time. Because I will kîll myself with àbôrtion. Three àbôrtions! Is that not enough, ehn?..’, Martha was yelling angrily.
‘Hey, don’t get me twisted, okay?,’ he paused. ‘Like I said earlier, I am not going to deny the pregnancy nor am I going to run away from responsibilities. Just that..I am very much confused right now. I never saw this coming. Nobody planned for it. As a matter of fact, none of us is ready for this. You know, keeping this pregnancy comes with a lot of things. Firstly, I have to act fast so as to save you from shame and stigma. And I am not financially ready for the impromptu marriage. Can’t you get it!..’, KC yelled, frustratingly.
‘KC stop sounding as if I want to use pregnancy to force you into marriage. Look, right now I am between the deep blue sea and the devîl. But I don’t have an option in this difficult situation. So I have to choose between two equally unpleasant courses of action. Because I don’t want to risk my life anymore. I don’t want to die young,’ she paused amid confusion. ‘ KC you know what I passed through last time I went through the àbôrtion of a thing. The complications were much of which you know. And it was by God’s grace that I survived. To this extent, the doctor had to warn us against going for àbôrtion again. That any further àbôrtion might send me to my early grave. And I don’t want to die young..,’ Martha had to remind KC.
Kelechi could not say a word again. He was totally dumbfounded. If not for the fact that Martha had to remind him of what she passed through as a result of the last unprofessional ábôrtion she committed, KC wanted to suggest getting rid of the pregnancy again. On the grounds that he was not financially ready to go pay for Martha’s bride price which was the only way to save her from the shame and stigma of the unwanted pregnancy.
Although it wasn’t a lie. KC was not financially ready for marriage now. Because he was totally down financially. And his shop was totally empty. No single goods were left in the shop again. As he had squandered his money as a result of his promiscuous lifestyle.
KC was so broke to the extent he had run into debts. In fact, people have started making caricatures of him in the market. Some said that he was cursed while some tagged him a big fôôl for using his hand to quench the light that had been brightening his paths.
Meanwhile, the series of the ábörtions Martha had passed through wasn’t of her ideas. All were KC’s ideas. In fact, the last one nearly took her life. She committed that àbôrtion against her wish. And the worst was that the evîl act was done by a quack. Consequently, it resulted in a serious problem. To the extent that Martha nearly bled to death on that fateful night. KC had to rush her to the hospital at that odd hour. Thank goodness Martha was staying with KC when the complication hit. Because Aunty Ifeoma traveled to Asaba to supervise Thompson building. So as a result of the severe torment by the spirit of the loneliness, Martha had to save herself from that by moving into KC’s apartment for the moment.
‘Keep the pregnancy then. Let’s see how it goes. I hope my situation changes. So I will know how to go about paying your bride price so as to save you from the shame and stigma that comes with the pregnancy as an unmarried young lady..’, KC concluded.
Martha still managed to keep the pregnancy as a secret to Aunty Ifeoma. Although she really wanted to tell her but she didn’t know how to tell her. She had no courage to open up to her about the whole thing.
The only people Martha couldn’t keep the pregnancy away from was Oga Mba and his wife. They have known even without Martha telling them. Martha doesn’t know how they managed to find out.
She was on a call with Oga Mba’s wife on the phone that day when she came up with the question: ‘Martha, tell me the truth, are you pregnant?’.
The way the question came, Martha couldn’t deny it. As she replied: Yes. Then she bursted into heavy tears that night.
Although Mrs Mba was very disappointed in Martha, but the mistake had been made. So the way forward was for her to advise her. And she admonished Martha very well that night.
And life had to go on.
But of the truth, no one was very disappointed the way Mr. Mba was in Martha. To the extent Oga Mba didn’t even call to ask Martha about the pregnancy.
Mr. Mba had a better plan for Martha. Now she had jeopardized everything with the pregnancy. Mrs Mba made it clear to Martha.
Mr. Mba only allowed his wife to be checking up on Martha. Meanwhile, the level of anger and disappointment Mr. Mba had in Martha, had it been Martha was his biological daughter, he would have disowned her for letting him down.
