???? A Daughter’s Revenge EPISODE EIGHT:
I was pressed. So I dashed to my room so as to ease myself. As I pushed the central door linking to the passage that led to all the rooms with force, lo and behold, it was Mr Ojo. He was silently listening to our conversation at the door. But unfortunately, I hitted the door against his forehead.
‘Sorry sir,’ I apologized, having found out he was the one.
He nodded in affirmation in acceptance of my apology while rubbing the place I hit him with the door.
‘Sorry sir. Sorry sir.’ I said again.
‘Who are you saying sorry to? What happened?’, Aunty Mary asked, having overheard me apologizing.
‘Shush’, Mr Ojo signaled me to keep quiet.
Silence prevailed. As Mr Ojo dragged me to my room while still rubbing the place I hit him with the door. He dragged me in one ear.
‘Martha, what happened?,’ I overheard my Aunt’s voice curiously asking again.
‘Nothing ma’, I replied.
‘Okay,’ she said.
When we got into my room, he shut the door. In a low and angry tone, he warned me: ‘If you dare tell your Aunt what truly happened that led to this plaster on my head, then you will have me to contend with in this house. You better play along,’ he released my ear. ‘I am still coming for you. Don’t think you have won.I am coming for you and this time around, you will not be lucky enough..’ he added and left.
I must confess, even as he left my room at that very moment, fear still gripped me. His last statement kept ringing like a bell in my ears. Even the urine that I came to urinate had ceased. As I went inside the toilet, I was unable to urinate again. So I had to come out from the toilet just the way I went inside the toilet in the first place.
Mr Ojoโs threatening words kept tormenting my peace of mind every now and then in the house. In fact, the house, once an embodiment of peace for me, has turned into a nightmare to me. Because I started living in fear in the house. The fear of uncertainty and danger. The fear of being rapยขยข.
Mr Ojo’s present in the house became a very big threat to me. In fact, his present made me very much uncomfortable. As such, whenever I see him, I see nothing but a beast hunting to devour what he was meant to protect. A beast in a human cloth like my uncle ishaku.
‘Why is this world so cruยขl to me? Does it mean that no man would ever help me without asking for sยขxuยขl pleasure? Or is it an abomination to be naturally beautiful and endowed again in this life?..’ These were questions I always asked myself every now and then.
Meanwhile we were on a long school vacation.
My earnest prayer was for the holiday to come to an end. So that the loneliness of the house and its adversities would as well, to some extent, come to an end.
On a fateful Thursday, Aunty Mary informed me that she would be traveling to Osun state to visit her mother-in-law and as well use the opportunity to bring Tony and Tonia back. Because school would be resuming in a week’s time.
The news broke me down into pieces. I was totally downcast on hearing it. I couldn’t imagine myself and that beast, Mr Ojo, alone under one roof. Indeed he would devour me.
I went as far as pleading that I go with her but she insisted on me staying back and taking care of her husband while they return back. She promised that they would be back on Monday evening.
The following Friday, my Aunt came back from work very early to embark on her journey. I was the one that saw her off to the park. I carried a very big bag for her. In the bag were the things she bought for her mother-in-law.
When we got to the park, she was very lucky enough to fill the last seat of the boarding bus. I watched and waved at her in tears as their bus left the park.
Indeed I shedded tears. I was very much confused on what to do next because going back to that house was like surrendering myself to the hungry lion to devour.
The worst of it all was that I had no place to run to. As I had no relatives in Lagos.
What should I do then?
I asked myself.
