Bruce tried to convince Tracy’s father to allow him go to the shrine, but the old man was adamant about letting him go an inch close to the shrine for fear of what could happen to him.
“Bruce my son, I know how you’re feeling and what is going on in your head, but you see, there’s nothing we can do about the things that concern the spirits and their choices.
“I was once like you. Madly in love with Stephanie, Tracy’s mother, but not allowed to make her my wife until she had performed the cleansing ritual that is peculiar to her maternal lineage.
“Her father got another wife after it became obvious that she was going to be an only child, but even though those other children born by her step mother, didn’t have to undergo this ritual, I still had a fierce competition with a lot of other eligible men, to be able to finally marry her.
“It gave me the chills when I thought of the fact that my extremely beautiful and attractive fiancé, was going to spend three market days, alone with a chief priest.
“Several kinds of silly thoughts crossed my mind and I was nearly going crãzy, but finally, she returned, and contrary to my imaginations, everything turned out just fine.
“Relax Bruce, everything will be just fine when she returns, and now that you have paid her bride price, you will be leaving here with her, with no worries again” chief Scot consoled Bruce.
Bruce could see that there was nothing he was going to do or say to make the man do what he wanted, so he had to resort to another plan.
“I will need to step out papa. The nervousness will give me a heart attàck if I don’t stroll around town.
“I just hope she’ll be back before I return” he said to the old man.
“Erm Bruce, she’s not coming back today. She is expected tomorrow, so you will need to take it easy on yourself” Chief Scot told Bruce, causing the young man to grind his teeth in annoyance.
“So the girl I have been preserving, the one I have agreed to let remain chaste to the day I marry her, is supposed to be with some stūpid chief priest, getting rummaged and smashed as many times as the despicable being wants?
“Cursed be that dàmned pack of shìt if he touches my wife before I find him.
“I’ll kick his àss so bãdly, his gods will desert him, when the go fleeing in fear and trembling” he muttered to himself.
“I’ll return to the city then. I can’t stay here while I wait, so I’ll come back for her when the ritual is done” Bruce said and began to run out of the house.
“Bruce, are you travelling to Porthacourt without your car? Please my son, don’t do this! I know what you’re planning to do, and I also know but won’t turn out well.” chief Scot tried to stop him, running after him, but Bruce was running màd, standing there.
He made his way past tense gate and raced down the street.
All the people he asked for directions to the shrine felt he was màd or under some sort of spiritual influence to imagine going to the shrine when the concluding gong had not been heard.
He was despêrate, and refused to give up, hoping that he’d find someone who’d help him with the information he needed, so he kept on moving, and asking.
Bruce stumbled into a man who obviously was as absentminded as he was, and didn’t see him coming.
“What is wrong with everyone now? Why won’t you all allow Okiri rest?
“I try to go this way, ten men are standing there, I turn this way, and this elephant also has to block my path?” the man said, staggering as he spoke.
“I’m sorry sir” Bruce said and made to walk past him, seeing how drunk he was, but a thought struck him.
“Wait a minute sir, what do you say, I give you five thousand bucks for you to show me the way to Ozonge shrine?” Bruce asked the man.
“Ozo what? Wait, do you think I’m màd? Does it look like I have a deãth wish?
“Oga, I know I called you an elephant before, but if you try to joke with this ant, I will show you why ant is added to elephant!
“How dare you ask me to walk to the shrine where deãth awaits anyone who makes an appearance before the gong is sounded!” the man screàmed.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to help me, I can be on my way then. I was just thinking that you’d like to have a taste of the new wine I planned to drink as I walk to the shrine” Bruce said, and turned to walk away, but the man grabbed his hand, just like he knew he’d do.
“But, shouldn’t you have told me that you know that I’m the only one that is brave enough to embark on that journey with you?
“Did you say the drink will accompany us to the shrine?” Okiri asked, staggering some more as he licked his lower lip in anticipation of the taste of the drink.
“Yes sir. And if you wait for me here, I’ll rush down to the place I kept it, to pick it up” Bruce told the man.
He ran as fast as his legs could carry him into the closest shopping mall, and got two bottles of whiskey.
Thoughts of what he’d do with the bottles of whiskey he had purchased, if he didn’t meet the man where he left him made him run really fast.
Luckily, Okiri wasn’t one to move an inch from a place he had hopes of getting a glass of drink, how much more a bottle to be shared between him and his new found friend.
“Where would I be going to after all? Is it not where I can get a glass of wine that I was going to before you nearly hit me down?” he asked Bruce when he told him about how he thought he may have left.
Bruce smiled and handed him a bottle, promising to give him the second bottle when they get close to the shrine.
Okiri collected the bottle with so much joy, hugging it happily as he began to walk in quick staggering strides towards the shrine.
They continued to walk deep into the forest, and at some point, Bruce was beginning to blame himself for giving a lion’s job to a zebra.
“How could I have expected this drunkard to be able to know the way to the shrine, when he didn’t know the way to his own house?” he complained in frustràtion, his head aching badly as images of the imaginations of what the chief priest could be doing with his woman began to flash through his mind’s eyes.
“You men from the city are very tricky. You wanted me to walk with you to this shrine, and you couldn’t come out plainly to tell me that you have been told that I am the only one brave enough to imagine it.
“You had to lie about not knowing the way to the shrine, and even promised to make me have a second to bottle if I can show you the way.
“See, even though I’m a little tipsy, I’m not drunk. I know that you know the shrine, and that’s why you chose to wait till we got to the last turn before the shrine, to make the complains, just to ensure that you don’t gjve me the second bottle” Okiri complained, looking really sad.
“Are you serious? Have we reached the shrine? How can I tell that you’re not just saying one of the shìts you’ve been saying since we embarked on this journey?” Bruce asked.
“Listen! Bend your head like this, and tell me if you won’t hear the great owl that watches over the shrine hooting!
“Look this way, and tell me if you don’t see the great tree in the middle of the shrine” Okiri told Bruce.
Bruce listened and heard the sounds of the owl and some other frightening ànimals.
He could see that the tree the man talked about wasn’t far from where they stood.
Okiri was clearly afraid of the journey, and Bruce could tell that the only reason he was still hanging on was the extra bottle of drink he had in his possession, so he decided to let the man go.
He gave him his promised bottle of drink and asked him to turn back.
Okiri didn’t need to hear it twice. He grabbed the drink out of Bruce’s hands and began to run quickly in the opposite direction.
Bruce spared a few seconds to look at the man, making a mental note to find him later, then he was racing towards the big tree, hoping he’d not arrive a second late.
Meanwhile, after Ozonge told Tracy to make up her mind to enjoy the ride, she tried to engage him in small talks, hoping that she’d figure a way to free herself from the situation while he talked.
“But, if you have the powers to make me unable to move like this, shouldn’t you be able to make me forget about the one in my head, and be able to find you attractive enough to love what you want to do to me?” Tracy asked.
“Oh, that’s very easy. I could have done that, but after I cleanse you and implant a seed in you to carry on the cursè, I’m not supposed to keep you by my side because we’re siblings.
“The gods will be màd at me for getting greedy because you are destined to be another’s wife, not mine.
“And once I have been able to make you pregnant, I will supernaturally have no desires for you whatsoever!
“The only reason I keep having this erecti0n for you is because you’re yet to get pregnant with my seed.
“So now that I have told you this, will you allow me the pleasure if making love to you, while you smile and hold me like you will hold a man you love?” he asked her.
“Wait a minute. Did you say we are siblings? Who among my parents are you related to? Is my mother or father your biological parent?” Tracy asked, truly curious to know.
“You ask too many questions! Well, the only reason I am not in a hurry is, chances are, after you have a perfect understanding of the situation, you will submit willingly to me, just like your mother, your mother’s mother, and the ones before, did with my father, his father, and the ones before.
“What’s more, I have the whole of today and tomorrow to make you pregnant. And the gods will be dàmned if they don’t let you have a female child implanted in you before the end of tomorrow.
“Plus, no one, not even you can stop me from having you. No mortal would dare approach this shrine, but even if someone tries to come this way, the owl at the entrance will serve him or her to the vultures
“I am going to tell you how we both ended up cûrsed, and why our children and the ones after them will also have to be this way, because I know you’d learn and not be like your mother.
“You will teach your daughter to do the right thing, submit to my son promptly, and keep her from getting tôrmented by Uloma’s voice” the chief priest said, and sat beside the immobile Tracy, to tell her a really long tale.
