(ONE WEEK LATER)
Sarah was in the early Monday morning, feeling a little nervous about the call she got a week ago, wondering where all this was going to go, when one of the task force inspectors, Paul Chin, rushed up to her.
“Sarah, there’s a woman in the Interrogation Room Four I think you should check out”
Ever since a physical description of the assailant had hit the airwaves, people had been calling in with fake sightings and dead-end leads. First the Headlines of Sarah Hales declared dead was cleared out and Chin’s jobs was to follow them up, no matter how unlikely.
“This one a psychic or a police buff?” Sarah asked with a skeptical smile.
“I think this one’s the genuine article” Said Chin.
“She has some questions about your parents ” Chin added.
Sarah almost leaped out of the chair after him. At the front of the squad room, she spotted Dominic coming in. Hale.
For a moment, a traingle of pleasure rushed through her. He left about some hours ago, after the conversation of the ups and downs of being married and about her missing parents. What scared her the most was the tremor inside that it could be something more.
Dominic walked towards her, carrying coffe and a paper. His smile alone sent some helpful pleasure and relieve. “Hey wife” he smiled. “Nice vest.”
“Chin’s got a live one in four” Sarah said, grabbing his arms. “Claims to have a physical sighting . You want to come along?”
In her haste, she was already by him, not even giving him a second of recognition. He put down his paper on the civilian clerk’s desk and caught up on the stairs.
In the cramped interrogation room sat a nicely dressed, attractive woman of about Fifty. Chin introduced her to them as Laurie Birnbaum. She seemed tight, nervous.
Chin sat next to her. “Ms.Birnbaum, why don’t you tell The Hales what you just told me”
She was frightened. “It was the haircut that made me remember. I didn’t even think of it until now. It was so horrible”
“You were at the conference meeting?” Sarah asked her.
“Yes, as a guests of the Brandt’s meeting” Ms. Birnbaum replied.
“My husband works with the chancellor Well at the university” She took a nervous sip from a cup of coffee.
“It was just a brief thing. But he gave mw the chills” She went on and Chin pushed down the record button of a portable recorder.
“Please go ahead” Sarah told her soothingly.
“How does the red beard guy look like?”, Dominic asked, suddenly cold and impatient. Ms. Birnbaum glanced at him and gulped down nothing as her gaze met his and she darted away quickly.
Sarah glanced at Dominic who stood beside her before looking at Ms. Birnbaum.
“He had this graying red beard. Like a goatee. The kind that they wear in Los Angeles. Didn’t see his face coz it was covered with a hoodie and with the looks of his body stature, he seems to be Thirty-five, forthy, but there was something about him. I’m not saying this right, I’m I?”
“You spoke to him?” Sarah asked, trying to get the scattered pieces in place.
“I had just come in from the conference hall” She said. Sarah looked at Chin then Dominic.
“What did he say to you?” Sarah asked.
Ms. Birnbaum massaged her brow, straining to recall. “Didn’t get the chance too. I never knew he had something under his sleeves but I saw him.walking out of the urinals where Flash was sitting upright, dead”
Dominic was ratcheting all the possible explanation from the killers face then he asked.
“You said he had a goatee?”
“That’s what was so strange. The beard ?ade him seem older, but the rest of him was young”
Dominic puzzled, an idea shot through him about it been his brother, Celestial, because he loved disguising himself with a fake goatee that made him look older but Dominic couldn’t accept the fact that it could be Celestial simply because he was sure he killed him that night.
“The rest of him? What do you mean?”
Dominic asked.
“His face. His voice. I know this must sound strange, but it was only for a moment, as I came off the Urinals and found the dead body” She pressed.
They got as much as they could from her. Height, hair color. What he was wearing. Everything confirmed the sparse details that they already had. The killer was a man with a short, reddish beard. He had been wearing a tux β the tux jacket he had used in covering his head.
A fire was building inside Dominic. He felt sure that Laurie Birnbaum was credible. The beard. The tux. They were piecing together the killer’s appearance. “Is there anything more,.anything at all that stands out to you? Some physical characteristics? A mannerism?” Sarah asked and she shooked her head.
“It happened so quickly. It was only when I saw the drawing of him in the chronicle…”
“Where’s the article?” Dominic asked, and all eyes fixed on Ms. Birnbaum.
