I woke up on the couch to find my cheating husband staring at me. Everyoneβs attention was now on me. Thatβs when I realized that this whole event was a trap. His other wife, Sandrine, had someone watching my every move. Thatβs how she discovered I ran an eatery. Her contacting me and inviting me over was all part of her scheme. She didnβt approach me directly at first. I stood there, confused and unsteady.
βOh wow, youβre awake. It was about time you woke up,β Sandrine said as she moved majestically into the living room.
βHey guys, sorry for everything, but I think the party time is over. I would like to thank you all for coming to celebrate my little princess. It just so happens that a family emergency has come up and must be resolved,β she announced, ushering everyone out of her house.
βSandrine, please donβt do this!β George pleaded.
βOh, so now youβre begging me, George. You and your mom deceived me for seven years, George. One, twoβ¦ seven. Seven good years,β Sandrine stated.
βBut Mina has nothing to do with this either. Sheβ¦β
βShe is the only thing you think about,β she blurted out.
βBut Sanβ¦β
βSheβs your side chick, for Godβs sake!β she continued.
βWhat! Side what?β I asked, looking up at George, who couldnβt even maintain eye contact with me.
βBabe, donβt listen to what sheβs saying. I wasβ¦β He struggled to explain himself.
βYou were what, George?β Sandrine interrupted.
She turned to me.
βGeorge and I have been married for seven good years. He told me he loved me and didnβt care about having kids. I thought he was true to me, only to find out from a friend that he has another woman somewhere with two kids.β
βYou see!β she exclaimed, sitting down beside where I sat.
βIn court, we signed a monogamous marriage contract, which by law proves that to this date, I am still his legal and only wife. You, on the other hand, are just my husbandβs side chick.β
βBut his mom and familyβ¦β I burst out crying, rushing to where my car was parked. When I reached the car, I sat down beside it and cried my eyes out.
By now, my kids would have probably opened the door to talk to me, but the unusual silence got me worried, and I decided to check on them. I had been gone for a very long time, leaving them in the car.
When I opened my car, my kids were nowhere to be found. Nuella and Emma were missing.
βEmma! Nuella!β I screamed, frantically searching for them.
George ran outside, and despite his efforts to find out what happened, I ignored him and continued calling my childrenβs names. My eyes were swollen as if stung by bees. I ran up the road, calling their names, checking if they were playing elsewhere. But it was to no avail.
I finally stopped when I saw Nuellaβs ribbon beside a small well. I ran there, only to find my two childrenβs bodies Floating at the top of the well.
βEmma! Nuella!β These were my last words before I collapsed and found myself in the hospital on full drip.
Even when I woke up, my head wasnβt clear as I spoke off-key.
βDoctor, please, is my wife okay?β George asked.
βYour wife is going to be fine, Mr. George. Sheβs just experiencing traumatic stress right now.β
βPoor child! I can imagine how much pain sheβs going through right now,β my mother-in-law uttered.
βWhat happened, son? How did you let this happen to your wife and kids?β she demanded.
βI did nothing, Mom. It was Sandra who invited her.β
βWhat? You mean that barren witch? Why would she do that?β
βMom! Sheβs not barren; we have a daughter now.β
βWow! We? Donβt tell me youβve been sneaking behind your wife, sleeping with that witch?β
βMom, please! Sandra is still my wife!β
βAnd Mina is your wife too! But look at what your stupidity has caused her. How can you be so foolish to stoop so low?β
βOh, shoot, Mom! Look, I am sick and tired of you constantly telling me I havenβt done this, I have done that. Itβs my life, okay! Let me manage it my way. Besides, you were the one who got me into this mess. I didnβt want to settle down with Mina, but you made me do it. Now look at what youβve caused,β George said as he angrily stormed out.
