We were now standing at their door. One of the officers rang the bell, and after waiting for two to three minutes, the door opened.
โGood morning, Sir,โ Sandrineโs mum greeted.
โGood morning. Is this the house of Sandrine?โ the officer asked.
โYes, it is. I hope thereโs no problem, officer,โ she replied, visibly frightened.
โPlease, can we see your daughter, Ma?โ the police officer insisted.
โActually, she went to get some groceries. I will call her on the phone. Please come in and wait for her,โ she ushered us in and then went back upstairs.
After a while, I heard her talking to her daughter on the phone, commanding her to come home quickly.
โSandrine, you have guests,โ she stated.
โItโs the girl who was here the other day,โ she waited for her to answer.
โYeah, Iโm sure thatโs her name,โ she listened again.
โHow should I know what she wants? Sheโs here with the police; come and sort things out. Their presence here scares me.โ
A few minutes later, she came down and informed us that her daughter would be here in a minute.
I looked around and couldnโt find anyone except for the grandma and the little baby girl. The grandma went ahead and carried her baby from where she was into her arms. She looked so beautiful, having eyes just like my Nuella. She was the spitting image of her father. Her big eyes caught mine, and she smiled at me. But instead of smiling back, tears rolled down my cheek, and I had to quickly excuse myself.
โWhat are you doing, Mina? Why are you trying to take away a mother from her child?โ I asked myself. I was outside her house, now pacing up and down, struggling to compose myself.
โBut I need to find out what happened to my kids. She needs to go to jail,โ I murmured to myself.
โHey! Are you okay?โ a voice spoke unexpectedly. I turned to see it was Sandrineโs mum.
โI am okay, maโam!โ I said as I stood in one spot, watching her walk towards me.
โI know youโre confused, hurt, feel betrayed, and even worse, but I waโโ before she could finish, I cut in.
โIโm sorry, maโam, but I need to go in now,โ I said and left her there speechless.
As I was just coming in, Sandrine drove into her compound and rushed to where her mum was. Both of them made their way into the house and greeted the uniformed men.
โGood day, sir. How can I help you?โ
โGood day, maโam. I am Officer Spike Mvondo. You need to come with us to the police station for questioning concerning the deaths of Emmanuel and Emmanuella.โ
โBut I had no hand inโฆโ
โI think you should do yourself a favor by keeping silent.โ
โBut why are you arresting me?โ
โWe are not arresting you, maโam. Weโre simply doing our job, which is to take you in for questioning.โ
โButโฆโ she persisted.
โNo buts, maโam! Please come with us. Donโt make things harder than they already are.โ
She turned to me. โYou think I killed your children? Who the hell are you to come to my house and arrest me? You started this war, and I will end it. Watch me,โ she blurted out.
โMaโam, please, this is not the time to start posing threats to people. Letโs go.โ
As much as I knew this was too much, I still needed to get justice for my children before they are buried. I was not a good mum, and so this might be the only chance I have to make amends for what happened.
