???????? My Addiction Episode Four:
I could feel my heart drum against my chest, as I saw that angel standing across the road. My blood pressure spiked and I could feel adrenaline rush through me.
How could a girl do such to me? Certainly, she wasn’t human. My gaze was fixed on her and every other thing blurred out from my view.
“… David. David!” Adele called, bringing me back into reality.
“Ummโฆsorry, is anything the matter?” I asked trying to maintain my composure.
“You just did what you always doโฆ” she said, her eyes getting teary.
“What do you mean?”
“David, you blacked out on me again. We were having a conversation but you suddenly stopped responding, like I don’t even exist.”
“It’s not like that Folakeโฆ sorry Adele.”
“Then it’s what?”
“It’s justโฆ” I stole a quick glance at the lady that was slowly becoming my addiction. She was still at the spot, trying to stop a cab. I really wanted to let Adele know the truth, I wanted to let her know that there was angel who had stolen my heart.
But the thought hit me, how was I sure that a lady as gorgeous as the moonlight would even look in my direction.
Like the old saying goes, “a bird in hand is better than two in the bush”.
I had to lie again.
“Ummโฆit’s just that I’ve not been able to focus on anything. My mind has been clouded with thoughts of this beautiโฆ sorry thoughts of how to survive with the little I have.” I said, wearing a frown over my face.
“You shouldn’t let that bother you. This will be the past someday, you just have to be prudent in spending. Things will be fine.”
Those were some nice consoling words. I was seeing that part of her for the first time.
“You’re right, thank you very much Adele.”
“Yeah, and if you don’t have anything to eat you can come to my place. I can prepare something for you…”
Wow, Adele was really becoming of great help to me. We could have an interesting relationship together but I already had an addiction. An addiction whose name I didn’t even know.
“I don’t know your place,” I replied.
“Ohh, I can take you thereโฆif you don’t mind,” she said, wiping her face with a serviette.
“Mind? Why would I? Let’s go,” I responded. I didn’t want her to feel unwanted, she would be a very great friend. Come to think of it; we were already dating, it happened so fast.
We finished our meal, and the waiter brought the bill.
Adele paid for everything, including the yogurt I ordered. It felt very awkward, and I wasn’t comfortable watching the lady pay for everything.
My eyes quickly searched across the road.
Not again!
The angel had disappeared. She left before we could finish our meal, I felt terrible. When would I finally get the chance to talk to her?
I helped Adele up her seat, trying to be the gentleman I was not. Like a couple on their wedding day, I clenched to tightly to her hand. Anyone who saw us at that moment would easily pass us for lovers.
I could tell Adele was ecstatic, from the serenity in her voice as she spoke. No doubt she relished the moment.
She said her house wasn’t far away, according to her “it’s just a stone throw away”. So we sauntered down.
I found myself lost in a plethora of thoughts, it was like I wasn’t even there. All I thought of was the angel I saw the other time, if I had just one wish, it would be to see her again.
I didn’t even realize the unerring silence I had created between Adele and I.
“Soโฆtell me David. Have you everโฆbeen in a relationship?”
“Yeah, of course,” I replied.
“Hmm, are any of your exes as beautiful as I am?” She asked hitting me on the side with her shoulder.
She had a tender smile on her face, it seemed she always wore a smile on her face.
I kept mute.
“You don’t have to tell me, I know I’m good looking,” Adele said smiling widely.
“Yh, you’re very beautiful Adele.”
Then I thought of it, none of my girlfriends in the past were as beautiful as Adele. Still I wanted someone else, my heart was with someone else.
“How about me? Are any of your exes as handsome as I am?” I asked.
Adele burst into an endless round of laughter. She laughed very hard, so hard, I almost felt embarrassed.
“To be honest, you’re handsome ok. But I think you’re on the bottom end of the list,” another round laughter followed.
I paused and watched her. Then she noticed I wasn’t comfortable with it, she forced herself to stop laughing.
“You know, it’s not always about beauty,” I said.
As the words escaped my lips, it felt like they were meant for me. It’s not always about beauty, it’s about spending time with someone who gives you unforgettable and happy moments.
Still, all my thoughts were of the beauty I saw.
We soon came to a halt in front of the street where she lived. It really was a stone throw.
We walked side by side, and I can’t lie that it wasn’t a moment to savour. Adele was slowly becoming a sweet friend, I had never been in her company for such a long time. Even if a fortune teller had told me Adele and I would end up dating, I would have argued till the ends of earth.
“Do you have hobbies?” I asked.
“Well I do, I love reading books, novels, I love reading stories.”
“Wow! That’s awesome cuz I write novels.”
“Really?” She looked surprised.
What a coincidence!
It felt like we complemented each other, I couldn’t ignore it. I write, she reads, unbelievable.
“Soโฆhow many novels have you written?” Adele asked.
“Well, I’ve only published a few.”
“Wow, I’m really impressed. I never knew this,” she said loudly.
“Yeah, we’ve never really had a good conversation.”
“Have you written any romance novel?”
“Yeah,” I replied swiftly.
“I’m writing one now.”
Adele paused, and signalled at me to follow her. We had gotten to her place but it seemed it wasn’t locked.
She pushed the door open, and I followed behind her.
“My bestie should be inside,” she said.
“Hope I won’t be a disturbance?”
“Of course, just seat, feel comfortable.”
I sank into the couch and heaved a heavy sigh. Her place was not big, but it was beautiful and very fancy. Most of the items and walls coloured pink, typical girls.
“Oh, she’s here. David meet Michelle,”
I turned and I almost gasped loudly.
Lo and behold! Before me was the Angel that had stolen my heart.
