???????? My Addiction Episode Five:
My eyes shone brightly and my neurons ceased to function.
I was transfixed to the spot, I thought it was all in my imagination. I had to be dreaming.
The girl my heart had longed to see was right before me.
I almost passed out, little wonder they say you can’t see an angel and live.
What a small world we live in.
“David!… David!!” Adele called.
“Yβ¦yes,” I was yet to regain consciousness. This girl must have worked great magic on me.
“Do you two know each other?”
“No,” I wrestled to say.
Adele’s friend looked at me in a seemingly awkward manner, I had made a very bad first impression.
I stretched to shake her hand and she feebly took mine.
My goodness!
Her palm was as soft as freshly baked bread.
She tried breaking free, I didn’t realize I had been holding her hand for almost a minute. She was irked.
F*ck!
I was messing things up.
“I’mβ¦uhhβ¦I’m David. You?” I stuttered.
She stared at me with a perplexed expression.
“Michelle, I’m Michelle.”
“Wow, what a wonderful name you have there,” I struck a complement but she didn’t respond, she looked detested by my behaviour. I knew I wasn’t doing well.
She left us and started back inside.
“Michelle!” Adele called.
“What are you cooking?” She asked.
“Jollof, I’m preparing jollof rice.”
My God! Her voice was sonorous, pitch perfect, extremely tush.
“Alright, will it be ready anytime soon?” Adele asked.
“Yeah, just a few minutes.” she nodded.
I sat back down and I was still shocked at what was going on.
“It’s a very nice place you have here,” I said, trying to regain composure.
Adele chuckled.
“Would you like to stay and eat some food?”
I didn’t want to become a parasite to her, she had already paid for my dinner at the restaurant. Accepting the food she was offering would be very discourteous.
“Uhhβ¦I’m filled already,” I lied.
So many lies for one day, I was a glutton and I knew very well my stomach was just like a basket. It takes forever for it to get filled.
“Are you sure? β¦Michelle cooks really good food, I’m sure you can perceive the sizzling aroma.”
“Yeah, I would but I have to say no. I don’t want my stomach to burst open,” I said laughing.
She tittered, but it seemed she didn’t really find what I said funny.
I relaxed on the sofa as my eyes walked over her place. The furniture, the gadgets, I never knew Adele could have such an adorable place.
“So tell more about yourself Adele, I’m really curious to know more about you?”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” I said, nodding in the affirmative.
“Ok, so I was born into a family of three children; two girls and a boy, I’m the firstborn actually.”
“Wow, amazing! Now I see why you’ve got that leadership spirit.”
“Thank you, but being the first child is not all that rosy.”
“How do you mean?” I breathed.
“Well, it’s almost as if you can feel the family weigh heavily over you.”
“Why is that? The family’s responsibilities fall to your parents.” To be frank, I was a bit puzzled.
“That’s if you still have both parents,” she said as a frown became visible on her face. I could see tears forge in her eyes.
“My dad passed away early this year, his brothers stole all he ever worked for. Ever since, all the responsibilities have fallen to my struggling mum and I.”
“Woah! I’m very sorry for bringing up such memoriesβ¦I never meant to.”
“It’s fine,” she said, now sobbing.
“Things have just been very hard lately, I may have to sell off some of my properties to enable me to pay for my younger ones’ tuition fee.”
“My goodness! I never knew you’re passing through such a hard time, you always seem happy.”
“That’s just my personality,” she swiftly responded.
If I say I wasn’t awestruck, then I would be a bigger liar than the Devil. I always thought Adele was doing very well financially, I knew her dad to be very wealthy but it was a pity he passed away despite all his wealth.
I had to change the topic, I didn’t want to ruin her mood, I had never seen her look that sad.
“Ummβ¦I want to ask you a favor and I just pray you respond positively⦔
“What’s that?” She asked with towering curiosity.
“It’s concerning our relationship,”
“Yeah, what exactly?”
“I need us to keep it under the cover, just low-key. No one has to know⦔
“Why?” She asked with raised eyebrows.
“I just don’t want people thinking bad about me,” I lied, again! It was a ploy, a ploy to ensure her angel friend doesn’t find out about us.
“David, I really don’t understand you but if you want the relationship to be a secret then it’s fine.”
“Really, thank you very much. Remember, no one has to know, not even your best friend.”
“David, you’re acting fishy, I don’t get you. Wait a secondβ¦Are you ashamed of me?”
“No way! Why would I? You’re a complete package.”
Just then, her friend walked in.
“Is anything the matter?” She asked softly.
“No, we’re good,” I replied.
“I thought I heard you guys arguing?”
“Noβ¦everything’s ok.”
“Alright. The food is ready, Adele you can serve it, I’m kind of in a hurry. There’s someone I have to see.”
“It’s alright, thanks for taking out time to prepare something for me. Just take care of yourself.”Adele replied.
Michelle waved at her, and made for the door.
I had to seize the opportunity, a perfect chance to speak with her.
“Iβ¦I also have to take my leave now, it’s getting late.”
“Why do you suddenly want to leave?, I mean; just like that? Are you tired of being in my company already?” I could smell anger in her voice.
“No, don’t say that. Kelvin must have being waiting so long for me, I have to go back home quickly. I just hope you’re not mad?”
“You know what, it’s fine. Just do whatever you want to do⦔ She sounded sarcastic and I could tell she wasn’t happy with me.
“Take good care of yourself, okay?”
She didn’t respond.
“I love you,” I whispered, but Adele was starting to give me the silent treatment. She totally ignored me.
I couldn’t change my mind, I had to hurry up and see if I could catch up with Michelle.
I zoomed out of Adele’s place and started walking hastily towards Michelle, I could recognize her even in the dark mist.
As I hurried down to her, it seemed like two voices were at war in my head.
One urged me to apologize to Adele, concentrate on her and forget about Michelle. The other which sounded so much like Kelvin did the opposite, its voice was the loudest.
“David, believe in yourself, you can handle these two girls and none of them would even know. Why settle for one, when you can have both?”
The voice was persuasive, and I found myself heeding to it.
“Michelle!” I called.
She paused and turned back, it seemed she recognized me. She waited by a corner and I walked speedily towards her.
I was determined to rizz this girl and ready to walk to the ends of the earth to have her in my arms.
I must quench my addiction.
