???????? My Addiction Episode Nine:
I was having a hard time deciding what I would reply to Adele.
I didn’t want to lose her, I made up my mind to call her and apologize dearly for my actions.
I didn’t need an angel to tell me, I knew I was taking her feelings for granted. Adele loved me very much, her eyes said it all. It was evident she cared greatly for me, like a mother would her child.
Still, I was taking her love and attention for granted. Some people say it is better to be with someone that loves you than to be with someone you love.
Nevertheless, this was not the case because I knew I had a huge chance of getting Michelle.
I almost bumped into someone as I was busy battling with my thoughts.
“Sorry, no vex.” I blurted.
The lady hissed and walked past me.
It was dark already, I had to hasten up.
I rushed to the road and boarded a taxi, I joined the driver at the front. Everything happening made me remember the love triangle I was at the center of.
The song, “Holding her and loving you” by Earl Thomas Conley was playing over the radio.
I found myself thinking about Adele and Michelle as I hummed to the lyrics. It dawned on me that I had found myself in a dilemma.
As thoughts raced through my mind, I didn’t realize when I began singing along.
“Yeah, the hardest thing I’ve ever have to do
Is holding her, and loving you
Girl, the hardest thing I’ve ever have to do
Is holding her, and loving you.”
The driver shifted his gaze to me and smiled softly. He must have been in his late forties.
“Son, you’re singing that song like it’s from your heartโฆ”
I just responded with a smile.
“Okay, okay I see. I’ve been in such a situation in the past and things turned out bad.”
“Oh really?” I was quite startled as to how easily he engaged me in a conversation.
“Yeah, when I was about your age I once loved two girls at the same time. I thought it was infatuation but it wasn’t.”
“Howโฆhow did you handle it?” I inquired.
“I followed my heart,” he swiftly replied.
“And guess how it turned outโฆ”
“Good?”
“No, things went bad. Terribly bad. In such situations you don’t follow your heartโฆyou do what is right.”
He poked me in the chest, the driver really sounded like a Sensei speaking to his student.
“So boy, if you find yourself lost between two girls, do what is right, your heart knows what is right.”
“But won’t that still be me following my heart?”
He laughed hysterically.
“Whatever you want to do son.”
I alighted from the taxi and began walking down my street.
As I got to my doorpost, I discovered that Kelvin was yet to return.
Immediately, I reached for my phone from my pocket. I intended to call him before speaking to Adele.
His phone had barely rang when he picked the call.
“Hello guy what’s up na, it’s very late and you’re still not back,”
“Why you come dey sound like my popsi?” I could hear him laughing after he said that.
“Guy you have to be careful, lest you get yourself into trouble.”
“Don’t bother yourself, I’m on my way. My baby will drop meโฆ”
He paused, and I heard the sound of a kiss.
My goodness! Kelvin must have been with that woman all through.
“Thanks darling,” came a voice from the background.
“Mtcheww,” I hissed, I felt hot under the collar. His recent behavior just irked me.
I abruptly ended the call.
Now, I had to call Adele. I immediately put a call through, I called her repeatedly but I could tell she was ignoring my calls. I wasn’t ready to play the game of silent treatment.
“Maybe I should send her a text,” I thought loudly.
I settled down, took a deep breath and began typing on impulse.
“Dear Adele, I’m typing this because you didn’t respond to my calls. I know you’re mad at me, I was probably radiating the wrong energy without even knowing.
You asked me a questionโฆdo I really love you? That’s like asking the Lovebird if it loves chirping in the cool of the evening, it’s like asking the sun if it will shine tomorrow.
And just to avoid you saying I didn’t give a straight answer I want to say this, yes Adele. I really do love you, like the butterflies are attracted to flowers, like the iron is attracted to a magnet, that’s how I feel about you.
And if anyone would ask me a million times, my answer would remain the same. Adele, I love you more than every grain of sand upon the Earth. This message is getting long, I should probably end it here.
I cherish you Adele and I want you to know this.”
I didn’t bother going through it, I immediately pressed the send button and threw my phone on the bed.
Phew! I rested my head on the couch, I felt a kind of relief.
Somehow, I felt like I meant every word I typed.
I sat on the couch, a plethora of thoughts racing through my mind.
Man! I never believed I could get caught up in this kind of situation.
What was I even thinking? Two best friends, this always ends badly in movies and novels but welcome to reality; I was ready to give it a shot.
I went to the kitchen to get something to eat, the soup Kelvin prepared was remaining from the other day.
I quickly baked eba and heated the soup. I refused to eat it just to let Kelvin know I was angry. But, now that he wasn’t around I began the feast.
How could I ignore such well prepared Egusi soup, he made it just like my mum would.
I ate to my satisfaction, gulped down a whole glass of water and just then I remembered; Kelvin was not yet back, I thought he said he was on his way.
I had to go back, pick up my phone and find out what was causing the delay. His safety was at risk.
As soon as I unlocked my phone I almost smashed it on the ground.
The message was marked as unsent.
F*ck! I didn’t have enough airtime.
All these while I thought Adele would have read my message but it wasn’t even sent.
“Nawa o! Village pipo!” I said loudly.
Just then, I heard a loud bang on the door and it suddenly became repeated.
My heart reached my throat, fear gripped my body and I was literally shaking.
“Help! Open up!!”
“Who’sโฆwho’sโฆthere?” I couldn’t help but quiver.
“Guy na meโฆplease open up fast! They are after me!!”
