???? ANDY’S POV ????
Chuks called me on my way to the event planners office and told me about his encounter with Madonna. He had called me earlier to tell me how unsightly Madonna had become, and how for the sake of the innocent child she gave birth to, he had to help her.
We already agreed it was okay to help her, and Sola had even been magnanimous enough to make a huge contribution to see how she could be settled. So that morning, he called to give me feedback.
“My guy, the moment that girl showed face in my house, Meg made it clear to her that no matter how pitiable her present condition was, her antecedents won’t let her allow her an inch closer to me.
“I was insisting that she allowed Madonna even pass the night in my house, since I have already discussed with you on how to help her
“And Sola has even been generous enough to send that huge amount of money to help establish her in a trade in the village, because of that child
“But Meg was adamant. Madam told me she would not help to hold a firewood in the fireplace, until it burns her hand.
“I laughed over it, and tried to assure her that if I couldn’t fall for Madonna when she looked everything beautiful and sèxy, there was no way I was going to fall for her when she was looking like a wïtch, not forgetting that I now have a relationship to protect.
“But Meg wouldn’t have a word of it. And my brother, I wasn’t ready to ruin my own, just to help another, so I had to agree to the plan of letting her pass the night in a cheap hotel Meg paid for.
“We took her to the village last week, and just as if her grandma was waiting for her to return, they have given her out in marriage to one rich Chief who already has four wives. So at least, her son has a father now” Chuks told me
“You know Chuks, this custom in your place is what always makes me imagine a whole lot of shìts most times.
“Now that little child is going to grow up, bearing an Eastern name, and knowing that Eastern chief as his father. What happens when tomorrow he grows up and meets a girl from the north, who coincidentally is Garba’s daughter?
“The innocent children will have no hint that they’re blood related. The guy will imagine that he is an Easterner, marrying a Northerner, not knowing that he was a Northerner by birth!” I said.
“So of all the things I told you, the last part about the boy now having a father is what you picked?
“I thought we have agreed to let these issues about our respective tribes and cultures rest?
“Hope you haven’t forgotten that I have my reservations about some parts of your customs and traditions too?
“I may not know how all these customs started, but having the young boy now belong to a family is better than leaving him to roam like a bàstard.
“See it as an adoption, and understand that the Chief who married Madonna, may have done what he did because of her beauty, but has helped her give her child a home and an identity” Chuks said, and I chose not to argue again.
I’d rather we spent the time talking about his wedding coming up a week after mine.
He told me he had to quickly strike while the iron was hot. He already proposed marriage to Meg, and she said a yes, so loud he almost couldn’t look up at the people clapping for them, because if the shyness that enveloped him.
I thanked Chuks for keeping in touch, and for helping with Madonna. It was kind of relieving to know that she was now with someone and wouldn’t be a bother to Sola and I.
Our meeting with the event planner was brief, and the blueprint for the wedding ceremony as well as the reception was shown to us.
A few days to the wedding, our immediate family members that weren’t already in the USA flew in for the wedding, and just like we had hoped, the wedding ceremony was a great success.
“Omò mì, I’m so glad we made it to this day! Òlorùn èshèy (Thank you Almighty God)” my mother told Sola as she danced with her to our local tunes during the wedding reception.
I felt so much at peace, seeing how everything seemed perfect, and how even if I was getting married for the third time, it was the first time I had my family members in attendance.
Sola’s cousins and siblings were over themselves with excitement and joy, gifting her so many things and rejoicing with us.
I was in a hurry to get over with the wedding. I needed to be sure that my propagator could still function because for quite a while, since I came to Chicago the first time with Sola for the deals negotiation, I haven’t been with a woman.
“Who knows if I’ll still know my way around there. It’s been so long I already feel like a vîrgin” I told Chuks the night before my wedding.
I don’t know how I would have felt if my wife didn’t allow Chuks be my best man because if the cold barricade she built between them, after he professed love for her
Providentially, the tension between both of them dissipated so naturally, as soon as Chuks got engaged to Meg, so he had to attend the wedding with Meg.
As soon as the wedding reception ended, I carried Sola out of the hall to get ready to baord the ship, and even though I was mocked for being in so much hurry, I didn’t have the luxury of time to make any explanations to anyone.
Chuks knew that I planned to get a one month honeymoon with my wife, so he too, had to make plans to have his wedding hold in a place I could attend.
Meg had told him of her desires to wed on board a cruise ship, and since I planned to be out and away with my wife for our one month honeymoon, we had to come to a compromise.
He suggested that I had a ship cruise honeymoon. That way, I get all the time I want with my wife, and still not miss his wedding.
“Um, so I’ll have to stay without touching my wife for two whole hours to watch you get married?” I joked and he nearly killêd me with the comeback he gave.
Happily though, all four of us boarded the cruise ship, Chuks and I had to co-fund and sailed off.
I felt pity for Chuks as he sat restrainedly by Meg who was looking at the beauty of the Sea and talking non-stop about her dream coming true.
“It’s okay guy. You’ll be in our league soon” I told him, patting him on the back, and Chuks nearly had my head.
I ran off to go find my wife bidding her family farewell and picked her right up.
“My wife shouldn’tbe standing for too long” I said with a mischievous grin and Yinka gave me big tap on my head.
“Take care of our most precious pearl in the family, Andy. Don’t wish to live if she cries for a second” he said, then got closer to me and whispered to my hearing alone.
“Except of course when you make her …” he told me, winking like a manïac, and I found myself laughing uneasily.
They all stepped out after all the hugs and farewells and our ship sailed off, just as I carried a now very shy and unusually calm Sola to our cabin. I have a marriage to consummate after all.
