I went home in shame. Getting rejected by a girl is a thing most guys can’t cope with; I sadly, very sadly fall in that category. I went straight to bed as soon as I got home but sleep couldn’t come. I rolled from one end of the bed to the other until it was almost dawn before I was able to fall asleep.
It was morning now but I was still in bed though I was wide awake. I just wanted to be by myself for a while before meeting anyone that morning. I didn’t want to be knocked back into the cold and sullen mood I had been last night. That would have been possible though if I was in Buea where I lived alone. Here in the village, my mum was in charge and would have none of my attitude.
“Luther!!!” I heard her call.
I refused to answer and pretended I hadn’t heard her call. She called twice again and I didn’t respond both times. Just when I thought I had been left alone, I heard a knock on the door. Guess who it was? It was my annoying younger sister.
“Luther” she called
“Sharrap!!!” I fired
“Mam says you should go and fetch water.”
“I have heard.”
“Then why are you not coming?” She asked, testing my patience.
“My friend you have delivered your message, if you wait another minute by that door, you will be in trouble” I threatened.
Just to make me know that my threats meant nothing to her, she delayed another twenty seconds. I got up from bed, tiptoed to the door so I could catch her unawares. I yanked the door thinking I would meet her there. She was smarter than me. She had already disappeared.
I went back into the room, removed my pajamas and got into something more casual. I went into the kitchen, took two 20 liter containers and went to the public tap.
The last time I had gone to the tap, I had hoped of meeting Annie there. Today however, I was hoping strongly that I don’t meet her. I filled my containers and was about to leave when I saw a young girl of about fifteen years running towards me. She was motioning me to hold on a little. I put my containers on the ground and turned around to face her.
“Good morning Uncle”
“Good morning”
“Annie says I should ask you to come. She says there is something she would love to discuss with you.”
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Was it not the same Annie who had very rudely told me only yesterday that she never wants to see me again?
“Ok, tell her I will be there soon” I told the young girl, then I asked,
“What’s your name?
“Bridget”
“Ok, thank you, Bridget. See you girls soon”
As soon as I got home, I told my mum I wanted to see a friend who lived not far from us. She didn’t refuse. I went straight to Annie’s house to find out why she wanted to talk to me. I was there in five minutes and I met her at the front verandah.
“Good morning Annie”
“Good morning”
“I am surprised you asked me to come to your house. Is your mum not at home?”
“No, she came back from her night shift early this morning and travelled to Kumba”
“Ok, so here I am. Would you be so kind as to tell me why you asked me to come?” I asked.
“Just want to say that I am sorry about yesterday. I wasn’t supposed to be so rude to you. I am usually not like that. I don’t know what came over me. Please forgive me.”
Who would have refused the apology of such a beautiful girl? I forgave her immediately.
“It’s ok. Shit happens every now and then. I am glad you came back to your senses.” I said.
She laughed.
“So we are good now?” She asked.
“Of course we are. Funny thing we had our first break up even before we started dating.” I joked. She laughed again.
“Tomorrow is Sunday. What will you be doing after church?” She asked.
“Nothing; I have all day to myself.”
“Will you come and see me? We will be cooking achu. Do you like achu?” She asked.
“I do. I will gladly like to come and see you. But since your mum is not around, can I come and see you tonight?” I ventured.
“Yes, you can. I will be waiting for you.”
“Ok, I have to go now. I told my mum I wasn’t going to be long. We will see in the evening.” I announced.
“Alright have a fun-filled day. I will be waiting. Say hi to your mum on my behalf.”
“She doesn’t know you. Who will I say is sending greetings?” I asked.
“Her daughter in-law” she said, and then laughed.
“You this girl, you will put me in trouble any of these days.” I joked. “Anyway, bye for now”
