???????? My Village Love Chapter Five:
I was completely taken aback. Why does this always happen? She was sobbing now as I held her in my arms.
“Who have you been engaged to be married to?” I asked.
“I don’t know him but I have seen his picture. He looks much older than me and has two kids already from two different women.” She lamented.
“What are you going to do now?” I asked.
“I don’t know. I don’t love him. I don’t want to marry him.”
“Is he rich?”
“Yes”
“Then it’s going to be tough. He will use his money to completely overwhelm your mum and the rest of the family.” I explained.
“What do you propose we do then”? She asked.
“We” I thought to myself. I am just a recently found boyfriend. We haven’t known each other for too long. None of her family members know me and she’s trying to involve me in a major family matter as this.
“I don’t know babe. I need to think.”
“Let’s runaway” She said, suddenly. “Let’s go somewhere we can live our lives just two of us.”
“That’s not possible babe”. I said, shaking my head. “I am still a student. How are we going to survive? I don’t want you to suffer on my account. I don’t want to run into trouble with your mum who will most likely raise hell as soon as she realizes you are gone with me.”
She stayed silent for a while then said.
“Luther, you don’t love me. If you did, you would do it for me.”
“It’s not about love, babe” I corrected her. “I love you and you know it. But let us give reason a chance, please.”
“Alright, I know what to do. I will marry him.”
“You dare not.”
“I will.”
“You won’t.”
“Then do something and do it fast.”
That was how I suddenly got myself involved in Annie’s family issues. If my mum actually found out I was holding back a girl from marrying a man that had been chosen by her family, I would be in big trouble.
She had told me the man was coming to see them next week. I was anxiously waiting to see what the outcome will be.
It was Friday. I was in her neighborhood when I noticed a big black Audi parked in front of their house. My heart sank. From the size and look of the car, the man must be very rich. There was no way I could know what was happening inside so I went back home. It was going to take me two weeks to finally find out because the next day, I went to Buea to register for the September session.
While I was in Buea, I tried to make her tell me how the man’s visit went. She refused. She said she will only tell me in person. I was very impatient but waited until I returned to the village.
I came back to the village on a Sunday and asked to see her. We arranged to meet at night after her mum had gone to the hospital for the night shift. I was all smiles seeing her again. After exchanging pleasantries, I went to the main point.
“So tell me what happened.” I urged
“What else? He came with a few members of his family to introduce himself.”
“And you agreed to marry him?” I asked, afraid of the response.
“No!” She exclaimed. “I told them I wasn’t interested. I ran into serious trouble with my mom as a result. They left angrily.’
“Good girl. You did well. However, what you have done is worst that waking up a mummy. We should be prepared for the backlash. I cautioned.
“Don’t worry, I can handle them.” She assured.
“Sure?”
“Sure.”
I went back to Buea a week later for the resit exams. I came back after one week because I had just one course to write. One day, I was coming back from the farm when her mother confronted me.
