???????? My Village Love Chapter Six:
I was tired because I had spent all day at the farm. I wasn’t ready for any woman’s trouble that afternoon. Worst of all, a woman who looked so angry. However, since it was Annie’s mum, I was forced to attend to her.
We stood behind their outdoor kitchen and she started.
“I hear you have been seeing my daughter.” She said in anger.
I paused for a while before mumbling a “Yes, Mam”.
“Do you know she’s engaged to be married?”
“No Mam, she has told me no such thing.”
“Now I am. You have to leave her alone to get married to the man that’s been chosen for her.” She warned.
“But she said she doesn’t love him. Why are you forcing your daughter to marry a man she doesn’t love?” I dared to ask.
“Shut your mouth” She shouted. “What do you know about love? You are very lucky your mum is my friend. I would have dealt with you. ”
She stopped for a while, scanned me from head to toe and then spat on the ground. She was sweating now and shaking. She continued.
“You are courageous young man. Very very courageous. Do you know what I can do to you? Do you know that you can be bewitched? Do you know from which area of the country I come from?”
I stayed quiet and didn’t answer. I let her vent all the anger in her before finally speaking.
“So you mean you are going to kill me because of my love for your daughter?” I asked, looking her straight in the eye.
“Don’t underestimate what I can do. That’s all I can say. Now leave my sight.”
I left her and went straight home. I had one resolve in mind; I wasn’t letting Annie go for whatever reason. However, since her mum had started talking about witchcraft, I figured it was time to let my mum know.
As soon as I got home, I told my mum everything. I told her everything from the day I met Annie to the happenings that took place that same afternoon. When I mentioned the word “witchcraft”, she realized it was something serious. She rushed into the house, got am extra loin and tied it around the one she was having on and asked me to follow her.
We got to Annie’s house some ten minutes later and my mum went on the offensive immediately.
“I heard you said you were going to kill my son.” She said, breathing heavily.
“I said no such thing.” She denied. “I just warned him to leave my daughter alone.”
“I don’t care what you said or didn’t say, al I want you to do is to leave my son alone. It’s your daughter you should be talking to.”
“My daughter has made her choice. Your son should leave her alone. If I ever find them together again I will have him killed and his corpse thrown into the lake. ”
“Witch!!!” My mum shouted. “Try me. Let anything happen to my son, even a normal headache, I will teach you why the bat flies at night.”
As she said this, she took my hand and dragged me out of Annie’s compound. I was so ashamed and embarrassed with myself. Because of my adventurous lifestyle, my mum had gotten into a verbal altercation with Annie’s mum. A woman everyone feared.
When we got home, my mum waited until I had bathed, eaten and rested. Then she said:
“Luther my son, bring that stool by the door and come closer. There’s something I have to talk to you about.”
