???????? My Village Love Chapter Seven:
“I think you should let that girl go.” My mum said.
“Why mum?”
“She’s a bag full of trouble. Guess you saw what happened today. ”
“I did mum but it’s not as bad as it looks.” I persisted.
“Not as bad?” My mum asked angrily and pulled her chair closer to mine. “Look here my son. That lady’s mother is very dangerous and well connected. I don’t want any trouble with her. My husband is no longer alive and I don’t have any one to fight for me should any trouble start.”
My mum was crying now. I couldn’t tell if her crying was real. She always uses that trick to have her way. However, at the mention of my late dad, my heart melted a little and I promised her I will do as she wanted.
“Alright mum, I won’t see her again if that will make you happy. ” I said.
“It will oh, It will make me happy. It’s also for your own good. I don’t want any trouble to come to you. Concentrate on your studies and forget about women. When you are done with school and have a job and start making money, you can have a woman then.” She advised.
“Alright, goodnight mum.”
“Goodnight my son. Don’t forget to pray before you sleep.”
“I won’t forget mum.”
I went to my bedroom and my younger sister was comfortably sleeping on my bed. Her usual sleeping place was my mum’s bedroom but sometimes she would just prefer to come and sleep in my room, just to look for trouble.
“My friend, I know you can hear me, get up and go to your room.” I told her.
She didn’t budge though I knew she had heard. I didn’t have time for her trouble that night, so I carried her own my shoulder and took her to her bed. She kicked and cursed and scratched and pulled my hair all the way but it didn’t stop me. When I finally dumped her on her bed, she started crying but quickly stopped when my mum started looking for her slippers to use it to shut her mouth. I went back to my room and slept immediately I hit the bed.
I got up very early the following morning and even before I had prayed, I checked my phone first. There was a single message from Annie. It read, “Please let me see you today. It’s important”.
Later that day, in the evening, I called her and told her I was at the back of their house. Her mum was home but she still managed sneak out.
“Good evening.”
“Good evening.”
“I am sorry about what my mum did and said. I apologize on her behalf.” She said.
“It’s alright, I understand. She’s just being a concerned mum. She wants the best for you.” I replied.
“Concerned? Did I hear you say concerned? She wants me to marry an elderly man with two kids from two different woman. I am still a teenager for crying out loud.” She almost screamed.
“It doesn’t matter. You are a woman. Besides it won’t be a big deal if you love him.” I said, jokingly.
“That’s one thing with you. Motivational speaker. University sense. I am being serious here and I suggest you do too. Anyway, I don’t love him. I don’t know what to do. Please tell me what to do.” She sounded desperate.
“How can I help babe? Your mum has too much hold on you. I can’t intervene. It’s risky, too risky. Besides my mum will get my head if I do anything foolish.” I explained.
“So what am I going to do? I don’t want to lose you. I have only just met you but it feels like eternity already.” She said, painfully.
I looked into her eyes and they were teary. I didn’t know what to do. My mum’s words kept ringing in my head. With her heart beating on my chest, I thought for a while then came to a solution; a temporary one.
“The only thing I advise you to do is to use delaying tactics.” I said.
“How?”
“Just pretend that you are ok with the idea but don’t let him touch you for any reason. I will be going to Buea in the coming days. When I get there, I will think of something to do.” I explained.
“So you are leaving soon?” She asked and burst into tears.
“Yes I am babe. I have to go back to school. I need to graduate and make money so that I can get you out of here.” I told her, wiping her tears.
“You are sure you won’t forget about me? ”
“I won’t, I promise.”
“Sure?”
“Sure.”
“I will miss you so much, so very much.”
“I will miss you too. Just be a good girl and pray for me.
Her mum had started looking for her. I said a hurried goodbye and vanished into the darkness. Three days later, I went back to Buea to come back during the Christmas break.
