???? Out Of The Water Part Eight:
We sat on stone slabs at the bank of the river.
“I’m ready to hear your long story” I said. She took a deep breath to collect all her emotions.
“I was in secondary school when I fell in love with a young youth copper who was teaching in my school as part of his service, along the line he noticed me because of my intelligence and he also fell in love with me, at least that was what I thought it was” She wiped a stray tear and continued.
“I became pregnant and when I told him, he ran away immediately. There is this tradition in my village where if a young girl got pregnant before she was married she and the man involved were to be sacrificed to the family idol. I didn’t want to be sacrificed, I was alone and scared with nobody to talk to. It was a really difficult time for me as I tried to hide my pregnancy after many failed abortion process.
I decided to come here and ask the river goddess if I could leave you here and you would become her child, she agreed and I stayed here till I gave birth to you and left soon after.”
She finished. I didn’t know what to say but all I think about was how the goddess kept this a secret from me, all my life I grew up thinking I wasn’t human, that I was a spirit just like the goddess and I could never die.
“What do you want now?” I said with great difficulty.
“I want to take you back my son” the tears rolling down her eyes disturbed me a lot.
“You can’t just take me, you rejected me and left me here!” I stood.
Growing up in the Marine kingdom was good as I never lacked anything but coming to the human world has taught me that money and having things in abundance can’t solve everything.
“If I hadn’t kept you here you would have died, I would have died but now that it has turned out like this, I’m here to take you back, please come with me” My mother pleaded
“I am not going with you” The anger in me said even though every part of my being was aching to know this woman that gave birth to me.
“Francis please, I am your mother”
I was about to reply when the goddess appeared, looking very angry.
“You heard him didn’t you, now leave” As she spoke the river behind her boiled in accordance to her tone.
My mother stood with a cowardly boldness.
“I am not leaving without my son” my mother stood her ground.
” He is mine, you gave him to me” The goddess replied with menace.
“I am here to take him back”
“That was not our agreement”
“I don’t care about the agreement I just want my son, he is all I have left?” My mother cried.
“Fine then” the goddess said calmly. “Prepare to die”
Before I could do anything to save my mother she was gone.
She was dead even before she reached the ground.
She was dead before I could even know her.
