???? The Devil I Became Chapter Five:
โAre you sure about this?โ Akpan asked.
โYes, I am. Itโs either her life or mine. Whatโs better than oneโs own life? I will sacrifice her.โ
โAlright, that settles it. Bring any item of hers tomorrow to my house and the rest will be history.โ Akpan instructed.
โJust that?โ Mike asked.
โYes, just that. Tomorrow at 7:00 AM.โ
The next day, Mike didnโt open his shop. He got up very early and went to Akpanโs place. As soon as he was allowed in, he produced his sisterโs used pant he had managed to steal the previous day. He gave it to Akpan with his hand shaking. Akpan took it and put in a calabash and made some incantations. A few minutes later, he opened the calabash and the pant was gone. Mike was shocked beyond words.
โThank you, Mike.โ Akpan said. โYou saw it with your own eyes. The Source has accepted your sacrifice. You may go home now.โ
โThatโs it?โ Mike asked, trembling.
โYes, thatโs it. Accept my condolences Mike, your sister is already dead. When you get home, you will notice that a large crowd has gathered at your house. They will be crying and mourning your sister. She is gone already. Her soul is already with The Source. It was a pleasure doing business with you.โ
Mike left Akpanโs house in deep grief. When he got home, he was alarmed but not surprised to find a group of women consoling his mother. She was weeping unconsolably. Her daughter, Ako was dead. She had died in her sleep. Her mother had gone to wake her up after realizing that she had slept longer than was usual. She didnโt wake up. A doctor had been called and after several attempts to resuscitate her, he had pronounced her dead.
I wonโt bore you with the details. However, it is worthy to note that she was buried the very next day. Akpan had instructed that she shouldnโt be embalmed. Embalming her would mean her body being rendered unable to work in the afterlife. Hence, Mike might be required to offer another person. Ako’s soul was already with The Source. However, they had to wait until after the funeral for her body to reunite with her soul. Then and only then can she start working and pay for all the money her brother, Mike had made in our own world. Therefore, Mike insisted that she be buried immediately and since he was the first child of the family, everyone obliged. No one suspected him.
Mikeโs other sister was present at the funeral. Her name was Sandra. Sandra and Ako were more than sisters. They were like friends. This explains why Ako’s passing ached Sandra more than any other person and she promised revenge. Two days after Akoโs burial, Sandra travelled to Oku. Oku is a place where many people practiced necromancy. It was in that village where people go to talk with the dead.
When Sandra got there, the Babalawo she met told her she couldnโt talk with Ako. He said whoever killed her is no ordinary ritualist. He was a cultist of the highest order and had therefore taken all the necessary spiritual methods to shield himself. He said whoever killed her sister was present at her funeral and had therefore used the soil on her grave to shield himself. Therefore, only that same soil could undo the magic. Sandra was instructed to go back to the village and bring a piece of soil from Akoโs grave.
A week later, Sandra returned with the soil. After adding some concoctions to it, the Babalawo gave her the soil back and told her to go back and return the soil to the grave.
โMy daughter, go to the grave and return the soil. Make sure no one sees you as you do it. Call her name seven times and leave. That same night, her spirit will escape from the evil ones and she will rise from her grave and seek vengeance herself. Her spirit is terribly vexed. She is angry and longs for revenge. She will have her revenge and before long, you will know who killed her. Goodbye.โ The Babalawo explained.
โThank you, Baba. I am very grateful.โ Sandra said and left.
It was late in the village when she arrived the village. She went straight into her room and locked herself up while she waited for nightfall. Soon, it got dark and everyone went to sleep. She got out of her room and went behind the house with a black nylon bag in hand. She went to where Akoโs grave laid and threw the soil on it.
โAko, my sister. I am greatly saddened by your death. I want you to rise from the shadows and bring your killer to book. Revenge, my sister. Whoever cut you down without a chance has murdered sleep. That person therefore has no right to sleep. Revenge! Revenge! Revenge!โ
She would never know, but Akoโs ghost rose immediately, looking pale and sad and angry. She was very angry and had a small hatchet in her had. She cast one sad glance at her sister, Sandra, then vanished. Her destination? To avenge her untimely death.
