Mandy and her daughter were worried about how things seemed to have suddenly taken a new twist.

Joe was preoccupied with seeing his mother recover and wasn’t sparing a moment to listen to Farida’s cries about needing money for something urgent she claimed to do.

“Farida, I don’t want to believe you aren’t concerned about my predicament right now.

“My mother is battling to stay alive and I’m so embattled because of all that happened while I have been staying away from her, and all you care about is what you wish to do with money?

“My cheque book is at home and I’m not planning to leave here until my mother wakes up” Joe said in irritation.

“Wow! So I’m now the devìl? You think I’m unconcerned about your mother just because I need money to take care of myself?

“I have been having pains in my pelvic region since the day the ròbbers invaded our home, and mum suggested I saw a gynaecologist to ensure nothing goes wrong with this pregnancy, and you’re screàming at me?

“No problems. Let’s all sit besides your mother and wait for her to wake up. Perhaps when she wakes up to find my pregnancy gone, it’ll make her healthier” Farida said, forcing a sob.

“What! You’ve been having pains for the past two days and you didn’t bother to talk about it?

“What is wrong with you Farida? Do you want to kïll me? How can you be joking with my hope of being a father?” Joe asked, exasperated.

Farida walked out of the hospital ward crying and complaining about how he always put his mother’s interest above her interest and how she was worried about the fate of her unborn child.

“I wonder what would happen to my child when it’s born! With your mother doing so much to ensure she pushes me out of your house, even before my child is born, I wonder what would become of this innocent baby that your mother doesn’t wish is born safely” Farida said.

“Oh come on baby, you know how important this child is to me, and how for it’s sake I can go to the moon and back.

“My mother isn’t trying to push you or my child away. She knows you’re the one giving us the hope of holding my child, so she won’t dare try to wish you were sent away from my house.

“The idiòt was talking so excitedly and loudly about how a woman had hired him to bang her non stop for the period of time she wanted him to, just to ensure that she fell pregnant for real” Joe told Farida.

“Wait, don’t tell me a married woman can go to that length to get pregnant?

“And does it mean Nkem forged the pregnancy results? If she did, Is she not as dêspicable as the other woman you overhead the man talking about?

“A woman who can deceive her husband into believing she’s pregnant is as bad as one who is cheating on her husband, if you ask me” Farida said.

“Well, what if the two women are just one person? What if it’s Nkem that forged the pregnancy results and has been sleeping with that cursed guy, just to get pregnant?” Joe asked Farida.

“No ways! It’s just not possible! How can she do that? Look Joe, I know I haven’t been the closest to her in recent times, but that won’t make me agree that she can do something as disgûsting as you have just said.

“Why would she decide to cheat to get pregnant? What would give her the assurance that she’d get pregnant by sleeping with a random guy?” Farida asked, feigning shock.

“Farida, do you think I would easily let the guy go away, when I heard him mention my name in his phone conversation?

“I got a hold of the dude, and just a little offer got him singing like a canary. I offered him a thousand dollars and he told me all I wanted to hear.

“He told me how my wife found out that rhesus factor won’t let her get pregnant for me so she had to hire him to do the deed.

“And so, any moment from now, she could come up truly pregnant for the guy, and try to make me accept the pregnancy as mine” Joe told Farida who kept screàming in supposed shock.

“So you see what I mean when I said you’re my only hope of being a father? Nkem can never get pregnant for me,and I do not intend to get another wife, j don’t have the strength to withstand the tròubles in polygamy.

“And do you also understand why we can’t blame my mother because she’s just despêrate to have a child she can call her grandchild?” Joe asked Farida.

“I understand. I’m just too worried about your mother and how much Nkem had indoctrinated her.

“She used to be a very firm and upright woman until the day Nkem moved out of your house. I really can’t help but keep wondering what she did or said to Mama to make her change so drastically.

“I just hope she doesn’t get mama to do some other dirty deeds for her. All I want is to give birth to my baby and bear you more sons, I don’t want any problems” Farida said, clutching her stomach as she spoke.

Joe looked at how she seemed to still be in pains, thought of his mother that had been lying unconscious for over two days, but decided to rush home to sign her the cheque she wanted him to sign.

He gave her the cheque and wanted to run back to the hospital, but Farida suddenly felt cramp pains in her thigh and needed him to help her massage the leg.

One thing led to another, and he was begging her to allow him make love to her.

“I promise to be gentle Farida, I’m so on fire, and I know I won’t be able to think straight if I don’t get this urge satiated.

“Please baby, I promise to buy you a beautiful gift on my way home later tonight, please just allow me, my love” Joe begged until Farida allowed him.

She was smiling in her heart as she recalled how she had planned with her mother to keep Joe away from the hospital to enable her put the old woman off

The doctor had told Farida that Mama was beginning to respond to treatment and should be able to talk to them in a few hours, so the mother and daughter decided to act fast.

Farida had thought her mother was going extreme with the plans to eliminate the woman, but her mother had been furious with her, asking her if she wanted to spoil everything they had already worked for.

“There’s no way around it Farida. Max, your stūpid boyfriend was màd enough to say the things he said to that woman’s hearing.

“If she wakes up and tells her son anything, then all our efforts will go to naught. She just has to go.

“Take Joe away and keep him out of the hospital and allow me do what I have to do!” Mandy had told her daughter.

And so while Joe humpèd and hummed in his room, Mandy was walking into the private hospital ward where his mother was still lying unconscious, to do her dìrty work.
