It was past midnight and my husband hasn’t come back home. I placed the living room thinking of where he must possibly be, but the I knew answer already, he was out drinking himself to stupor again.

I still couldn’t give up thinking about his whereabout, for a moment I dared to imagine that he was somewhere else other than the bear parlor. That he was probably stuck at work and couldn’t come home because of the distance so he had to spend the night in office or perhaps he was stuck in Lagos traffic. It sounded ridiculous that Andre, my husband would be in any of those situation.

I heard the gate open, it must be him. I ran to the front door like the mad woman Andre and his family had made me to be.

I wasn’t familiar with the car that drove in, I was about to shout at the gate man for opening the gate to a stranger when Andre came out of the car, completely drunk.

The car reversed out of the compound immediately Andre started retching. I went quickly to him and helped him stay still as he vomited. I crinkled my nose in disgust.

“Leave me alone” he slurred, probably too weak to push me off which I’m sure he would have done if he wasn’t this wasted.

“Let’s go inside” I cooed.

“Barren woman, leave my side you barren woman” he said trying in vain to push me off.

I didn’t know when I started crying, even after all these years that name still affected me.

I cleaned my tears and carried him inside the house, the moment I laid him on the couch he slept off.

I am a barren woman.
